ABOUT

Having left school in 1979,I began an apprenticeship as a Drystane Dyker with Hugh Drysdale (Master Craftsman) with whom I worked with happily for 10 years.I then started my own Drystane Dyking business in 1989,based firstly in Auldgirth and then a few years later in Dumfries, which is where I am based today. My work ranges from repairing and rebuilding dykes including estate maintenance contracts, forestry contracts complete rebuilds and insurance work, to  ornamental, decorative garden features built only using natural stone.I have over 30 years experience working with different types of stone.I undertake both large and small projects in South West Scotland (and further afield if required), working closely with all of my clients to provide a reliable and professional service.

The art of Drystane Dyking

Drystane Dyking (dry stone walling) is considered by many people to be an art, and has a history dating back hundreds of years. The most common drystane dykes were built primarily from stone gathered from fields or sometimes brought in from local quarries. To this day they are still one of the most enduring features of Scottish landscapes, enhancing the environment and providing shelter and habitat for a vast range of wildlife.

As the name Dry Stane Dykes would suggest, these walls are built without the use of mortar (cement). This creates an ideal habitat for small creatures, insects, lichens and mosses, which in turn produces a natural look to the garden while at the same time, helping the environment.Dry stone features are becoming increasingly popular in the residential garden with each drystone feature bringing unique and natural beauty to your property.

With a bit of imagination and clever design, a garden wall/dyke constructed from natural stone will add value to any property and give any garden a natural look and feel, which in turn enhances the environment and the landscape.
